How to Trust Your Inner Guidance with Human Design Authority

I used to feel the same way. Learning about my Human Design Authority was the shift I needed. It showed me how I’m naturally designed to make decisions that feel good and aligned, and I realised I’d been ignoring this inner guidance for far too long.

In this post, I’ll walk you through what the Human Design Authorities are and how you can start using it to make decisions with confidence and ease, so you can stop overthinking and start living in flow.

What Is Human Design Authority?

Your Human Design Authority is your inner decision-making compass. It’s how your body naturally guides you to make the best choices, without needing to overthink or rely on external validation. Authority isn’t about logic or what seems practical; it’s about trusting the way you’re naturally designed to make decisions.

When you follow your Authority, you begin to move through life with ease. It’s not about forcing decisions or second-guessing yourself; it’s about tuning in to what your body already knows is right for you.

 

The Different Human Design Authorities

Each Human Design Authority works in a unique way, depending on how you’re naturally wired. Let’s break them down and explore how each one can help you make decisions with clarity and confidence.

1. Emotional Authority: Feel through your decisions

If you have Emotional Authority, it’s important to give yourself time before making decisions. Your emotions are like waves! Sometimes you’re riding a high, and other times you’re in a low. Clarity comes after you’ve experienced the full wave, not in the heat of the moment.

What this looks like:
Feel your way through decisions. Give yourself time to ride the emotional wave and allow your emotions to settle before choosing what’s best for you. You’ll find that with patience, the right choice becomes clear, and you avoid making impulsive decisions that don’t feel aligned in the long run.

2. Sacral Authority: Listen to your gut

With Sacral Authority, your gut response is your guide. It’s an immediate, visceral feeling – either a full-body “yes” or a clear “no.” This Authority speaks in sounds or sensations, like a deep “uh-huh” for yes or “uh-uh” for no.

What this looks like:
Open-ended questions can be overwhelming for you, so try giving yourself two clear options and feel for the sacral response. Your body knows the answer instantly, whether it’s a feeling of expansion (yes) or contraction (no). Trust that gut instinct to guide you in the right direction.

3. Splenic Authority: Trust your intuition

If you have Splenic Authority, your intuition speaks softly and quickly. It’s a quiet nudge or a subtle sense of knowing that happens in the moment, guiding you toward what’s safe and right. The spleen is focused on survival and instinct, so your decisions come from a deep, intuitive place.

What this looks like:
Pay attention to those instinctive feelings or sudden insights. The splenic voice can be easy to miss, so get familiar with how it feels in your body – whether it’s a soft whisper, a gut sensation, or a fleeting sense of “knowing.” Trust those intuitive hits without over analysing them.

4. Ego Authority: Follow your heart’s desires

Ego Authority is all about tuning into what you truly want. For people with this Authority, it’s important to focus on what brings joy and fulfilment. While societal conditioning might make you feel like prioritising your desires is selfish, the truth is, when you follow your heart, you’re actually best serving those around you too.

What this looks like:
Check in with what your heart truly wants. Are you making a decision based on your desires, or are you doing what others expect of you? When you choose what aligns with your own needs and wants, you not only serve yourself but you’re also in a better place to serve others.

5. Self-Projected Authority: Speak your truth

If you have Self-Projected Authority, your clarity comes from talking things out. The sound and frequency of your voice guide you toward the right decision. It’s not about someone else giving you advice, but about hearing your own voice and letting it guide you to what feels aligned.

What this looks like:
Engage with trusted people who will listen without judgement. As you speak, notice how your tone and energy shift. The more you talk through your thoughts, the more you’ll hear what feels true and aligned for you.

6. Mental/Environmental Authority: Surround yourself with the right environment

For those with Mental or Environmental Authority, decisions come from being in the right space with the right people. Your clarity depends on being in supportive, aligned environments where you feel safe and recognised.

What this looks like:
When faced with a big decision, find a space that feels good to you, and be around people who support you. Talking things out in this environment will help the right decision naturally emerge.

7. Lunar Authority: Take your time!

If you’re a Reflector, your decision-making process is tied to the lunar cycle. You need a full lunar cycle (28 days) to gain clarity on big decisions. This isn’t necessary for small, everyday choices – trust your intuition for those – but for major decisions, it’s important to observe how you feel over time and in different environments.

What this looks like:
Give yourself the space to honour your unique process. As the moon moves through its phases, notice how your feelings shift. With patience, clarity will come naturally, and you’ll feel confident in your decision by the end of the cycle.

 

How to Apply Your Authority in Daily Life

Now that you understand your Human Design Authority, how do you start applying it to your everyday decisions? Here’s how each Authority type can support you in making aligned choices:

  • Emotional Authority: Practise patience! Avoid making decisions in the heat of the moment. Sleep on it, wait for the emotional wave to settle, and then decide.
  • Sacral Authority: Start small! Listen to your gut when making everyday choices like what to eat or what to say yes to. Build trust in that gut response for bigger decisions.
  • Splenic Authority: Trust those subtle, instinctive nudges! They come quickly, and your first feeling is usually the right one.
  • Ego Authority: Check in with your heart’s desires! Make sure your decisions are aligned with what you truly want, not what others expect.
  • Self-Projected Authority: Talk it out with someone you trust! Listen to your own voice and how it resonates as you speak.
  • Environmental Authority: Find the right space and people who make you feel supported and clear! Your decision will emerge in the right environment.
  • Lunar Authority: Give yourself the time you need! Decisions for you are a long game, allow the full lunar cycle to bring you clarity.

 

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

When learning to trust your Authority, it’s easy to fall into a few common traps. Here’s what to watch out for:

  • Rushing decisions: Especially if you have Emotional or Lunar Authority, don’t let pressure force you into making decisions too quickly.
  • Overthinking: For Sacral and Splenic Authorities, trust your body’s first response. Over analysing can lead to confusion.
  • Seeking external validation: While it’s natural to want confirmation, your Authority knows best. Learn to trust your own inner guidance.
